課程概述

This course examines some species of art that reveal artists’ imagination and recreation of nature: poetry, landscape, and gardening. It also introduces some stimulating perspectives such as philosophical, evolutionary, and neuro-aesthetics into our discussions. Students are encouraged on the one hand to discover subtle differences between these types of artwork, and on the other to stage dialogues or to play games with them. In terms of academic training, this course pursues one line of semiotic thinking: how our perceptions of verbal and non-verbal sensory forms converge and diverge in the course of interpreting, scope widening, and generating meanings.

課程目標
Both the instructor and students will learn how they can relate artworks to biological, aesthetic and evolutionary issues at a profound level.
課程要求
Students are required to (1) preview contents for each week; (2) participate in class discussions; (3) submit journals in which they reflect on assigned topics; (4) present case studies of certain artworks they are interested in; (5) submit final papers in which they demonstrate understandings of both textual and methodological issues.
